Treatment of Medical Wastewater

1. Characteristics:

1) Hospital sewage is contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms such as feces, infectious bacteria and viruses. It is infectious and can induce diseases or cause harm.

2) Hospital sewage contains toxic and harmful substances such as acids, alkalis, suspended solids, BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and animal and vegetable oils.

3) The sewage generated during dental treatment, photo processing and laboratory testing contains heavy metals, disinfectants, organic solvents, etc. Some of them are carcinogenic, teratogenic or mutagenic, which endanger human health and have a long-term impact on the environment.

4) Radioactive sewage is generated during isotope treatment and diagnosis. Radioactive isotopes produce α-, β- and γ-radioactivity during the decay process, and accumulate in the human body to endanger human health.

2. Treatment Difficulties:

It contains pathogenic bacteria, has a complex composition, a high concentration of suspended solids, and an unbalanced water quality.

3. Treatment Process:

Physicochemical treatment + biochemical treatment

4. Solutions:

After applying physicochemical treatment, the combined anaerobic + aerobic treatment process is then applied to further remove pollutants in the wastewater so that it can be discharged up to the standards.

5. Discharge Standards:

The discharge limits of water pollutants for general medical institutions and other medical institutions in Table 2 of the Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Medical Institutions (GB18466-2005).
